Nikè Intaglio Bracelet

A breathtaking, museum-quality intaglio, a testament to the mastery of Roman artisans in the 1st century CE, graces our Nikè Intaglio Bracelet. Carved from carnelian into a standing rectangle with softly rounded corners — an exceptionally refined and rare shape — this gem exemplifies the elegance and technical sophistication of early Imperial glyptic art.

The engraving depicts Winged Victory (Nikè) dancing forward with a wreath in her right hand. Her drapery flows with rhythm and vitality, the folds rendered with remarkable precision. The composition recalls the sculptural Nikai of the Augustan age, symbols of divine favour and imperial peace, and demonstrates the engraver’s extraordinary ability to animate a figure within millimetres of depth and height.

In the tradition of Roman seals, the intaglio would originally have been mounted in a gold ring, serving as a personal signature. When pressed into wax, the image appears in reverse — Nikè then faces left — revealing the engraver’s complete command of proportion and movement. To preserve and study this artistry, Maison Sassi created a gold impression from the original stone using the ancient lost-wax casting technique, faithfully capturing every nuance of the carving.

Carnelian, a translucent variety of chalcedony treasured since antiquity, was believed to channel vitality, eloquence and courage. Its orange-red hue, typical of the finest stones traded from Sardis and India, enhances the goddess’s radiant poise — a union of material and meaning.

Now set in a flexible 18k rose gold bracelet weighing 17.50 grams, the intaglio is framed by two sculpted wings adorned with 18 orange sapphires. Their glow enriches the warmth of the carnelian, evoking the shimmer of victory. The design subtly reinterprets the form of Roman armillae, gold armbands once awarded for valour, translating them into a modern expression of strength and refinement.

This one-of-a-kind treasure has now found its custodian, who received it as a 25th wedding anniversary gift from her loving husband. A celebration of enduring love, of shared victories, of a life danced together.
