Nikè Carnelian Intaglio Earrings
A Roman intaglio from the late 1st century BC, carved in carnelian, depicts Nikè, the winged goddess of victory. She stands in profile, poised and light-footed, holding a laurel crown and a palm branch, timeless symbols of triumph and celebration.
This miniature carving, measuring just 10.1 x 9.6 mm, was engraved during the reign of Augustus, a period when Nikè’s image flourished in association with Roman conquest and imperial legitimacy. It is now set in a tailored oval gold bezel, crowned by a softly textured gold half-sphere enriched with granulation, a millennia-old technique found throughout ancient Mediterranean jewellery.
Its counterpart earring bears the impression of the same carnelian intaglio, cast in gold and once again encased in carnelian. The reverse reveals, with striking clarity, the technical mastery of the original engraving: each feather, each fold of drapery, every nuanced gesture is articulated with astonishing finesse and exactitude, all the more remarkable given the intaglio’s diminutive scale.
A rare opportunity to wear ancient mastery of the highest order, reinterpreted through contemporary design and realised with uncompromising craftsmanship.
