Nikè Earrings

These exquisite Nikè earrings feature a museum-quality Roman intaglio from the 1st or 2nd century CE. Crafted in green-coloured chrome chalcedony, the intaglio depicts the winged goddess Nikè in a flowing tunic, gracefully striding to the left while holding a palm frond – her symbol of triumph. The intricate detail and precision of the carving suggest it was likely commissioned by a wealthy and influential Roman, reflecting their status and refined taste.

Chrome chalcedony was a rare and highly prized material in Roman times, used for jewellery and seals due to its captivating green hue. The mystery surrounding its source, lost to history as the mine ceased to yield, adds to the intrigue and exclusivity of this piece.

In an innovative nod to its historical use, we created a gold counterpart to the original intaglio for these earrings. First, an imprint in wax was made from the seal, and using the ancient lost-wax casting technique, its gold version was meticulously crafted. This cast, mirroring the intaglio as it would have appeared to its Roman owner and those verifying their seal, is encircled by nephrite jade – a gemstone chosen to complement the green hues of the now-unavailable chrome chalcedony.

The left earring showcases the original Roman intaglio, weighing 4.90 ct., set in a contemporary gold frame. Its partner, featuring the gold imprint surrounded by 6.18 ct. of nephrite jade, creates a harmonious aesthetic balance. Together, these earrings unite the artistry of the past with modern design, resulting in a wearable masterpiece.

A testament to history, artistry, and the timeless beauty of ancient treasures, these earrings carry the spirit of Nikè, goddess of victory. They offer the wearer a profound connection to the triumphs of the past and the promise of personal victories yet to come.
