Histiaia Ring

The Histiaia Ring features an extremely fine (EF) silver tetrobol coin from Euboia, minted between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE. The coin depicts the nymph Histiaia in profile, adorned with a pearl necklace and earrings. Her hair is elegantly styled in a sphendone, wreathed with vine leaves and grapes, symbolising Euboia’s rich heritage as a center for viticulture. The grapes prominently featured in her hair further emphasise the region’s ancient significance in wine production.

Histiaia, the nymph, was closely tied to the city that bore her name. As a symbol of the vital spring or river sustaining the city’s prosperity, she held a revered place in local mythology. Histiaia became a notable city-state in ancient Greece, flourishing in maritime trade and agriculture, particularly in wine production, which played a crucial role in its prominence and wealth.

The coin is set in an innovative open design, where the band is crafted to resemble frosted 18k yellow gold vines intertwined with highly polished gold grapes. Twelve of these grapes are delicately set with grey diamonds, enhancing the design with subtle brilliance. The ring, weighing 5.82 grams, beautifully merges ancient history with contemporary craftsmanship, resulting in a distinctive piece that captures the spirit of both past and present.
